Bunbury is famous for one unforgettable experience - meeting wild bottlenose dolphins in their natural habitat. Located along the sheltered waters of Koombana Bay in the Bunbury Geographe region, this coastal city offers one of the most accessible dolphin encounters in Western Australia. If you’re planning a South West getaway, spotting dolphins should be at the top of your list.

Visit the Dolphin Discovery Centre
The Bunbury Dolphin Discovery Centre is the best place to begin your dolphin adventure. This nationally recognised marine research and education facility offers interactive exhibits, guided tours and the opportunity to learn about the resident dolphin population that calls Koombana Bay home.

On selected mornings (season dependent), visitors may even have the chance to participate in a supervised wild dolphin interaction. These experiences are carefully managed to protect the dolphins while allowing visitors to connect respectfully with marine life.

You can learn more or book ahead via the official Dolphin Discovery Centre website.

Where to See Dolphins for Free

One of the most special aspects of Bunbury is that dolphin sightings are common - even without a tour. Koombana Bay Beach is a known hotspot, particularly in the early morning when dolphins often come close to shore.

Bring a coffee, take a walk along the foreshore and keep watch - you may be rewarded with a fin cutting through the calm waters.

For updated regional information, refer to the official Australia’s South West – Bunbury Geographe tourism page.

Take It to the Water

For a closer look, consider a local eco-cruise. Dolphin-watching boat tours operate seasonally and provide insight into dolphin behaviour, local marine ecosystems and conservation efforts.

These tours are especially popular during warmer months (November to April), but dolphins can be seen year-round.

Make a Weekend of It

While dolphins are the highlight, Bunbury offers much more:

  • Swim at Koombana Bay
  • Visit Marlston Hill Lookout
  • Explore the Bunbury Wildlife Park
  • Enjoy waterfront dining along Victoria Street
